Section 01What Makes What Will It Bee Distinct

What Will It Bee is the only bee wording that is also a gender reveal. Every other bee shower direction — Mama to Bee, Parents to Bee, Sweet as Can Bee — is a celebration of an arrival. What Will It Bee is a celebration and a question simultaneously. Three things make it structurally different from every other bee shower format.

It is a dual-purpose event. A What Will It Bee shower combines the baby shower and the gender reveal in a single event. This means every element needs to carry both functions: the celebration warmth of a shower and the anticipation of a reveal. The invitation announces both: guests are coming to celebrate the baby and to find out what the baby will be. The decorations serve both: they create the celebratory atmosphere of a shower and they build the anticipation that makes the reveal moment land. Designing only for one function and adding the other as an afterthought produces a shower that feels neither fully celebratory nor fully revelatory.

The exterior must be completely gender neutral. The outside of every element — the cake, the balloons, the decorations, the favour boxes — must be in the neutral bee palette: warm yellow, cream, and sage. Pink or blue anywhere on the exterior gives away the answer before the reveal moment. A pink balloon cluster in the corner tells every guest the answer before the cake is cut. A blue ribbon on the favour boxes answers the question before anyone asks it. The reveal is inside, not outside. Enforce this rule without exception — including for florals, table runners, ribbons, and napkins.

The reveal moment is the hero of the entire event. Every decoration decision should build anticipation toward one single dramatic reveal moment. The cake cut, the confetti cannon, the balloon pop — whichever method is chosen, it should be the event’s clear centrepiece, not one of several activities. When the reveal moment is not clearly the hero — when it is preceded by games, a meal, gift opening, and a speech, and then arrives as one more item on the schedule — the energy that should build to it has already dissipated. Structure the entire event toward the reveal as its culmination.

Section 02Two What Will It Bee Directions

Two aesthetic directions, both with a completely neutral exterior palette and the reveal colour hidden inside. Both work for any reveal method; the choice between them depends on the couple’s aesthetic.

2.1 — Classic What Will It Bee

Warm honey yellow, cream, and soft sage as the complete exterior palette. Bee illustration in the warm, botanical quality of the core collection — illustrated bees, honeycomb motifs, and wildflower elements in the neutral honey palette. The cake exterior: warm honey buttercream with a single bee detail — no pink, no blue, no hint. The balloon cluster: all warm yellow and cream, sealed. The table: warm linen, small honey jars, sage greenery, dried botanicals. The pink or blue appears for the first time and the only time inside the cake when it is cut, inside the balloons when they are popped, or in the confetti cannon when it fires. Everything before that moment belongs entirely to the neutral bee world.

2.2 — Gingham What Will It Bee

The most preppy and most tailored What Will It Bee direction: gingham pattern alongside bee motif in the same completely neutral exterior palette — warm yellow, cream, and sage gingham rather than classic honey tones. The gingham direction reads as more structured and more graphic than the classic direction, suited to a couple whose aesthetic runs toward the tailored and the considered rather than the botanical and the warm-organic. Decor pairing: gingham table runner in warm yellow and cream, small bee motif details, wooden serveware, kraft-toned favour packaging. The reveal method and the neutral-exterior rule are identical: pink or blue appears inside one single element at one single moment — nowhere before, nothing after.

Section 03The Reveal Moment

Choose one method. Brief every vendor and every helper on the method. Execute it cleanly as the event’s single dramatic culmination. Four options, each with a specific production note.

Cake cut. The most intimate and most photographed reveal method. The couple cuts the cake together; the interior sponge colour — pink or blue — is visible in the cut slice and in the interior layers as the cake is opened. Works best for a small, close gathering where the cutting moment is visible to every guest simultaneously. The cake must be ordered with coloured sponge from a baker who understands the reveal format; the exterior buttercream must be neutral throughout.

Confetti cannon. The highest-energy and most visually spectacular reveal method. A single confetti cannon fired by the couple simultaneously releases pink or blue confetti into the room. Works for any group size because the confetti is visible from everywhere in the space. Coordinate with the venue about confetti use and cleanup before committing to this method; some venues prohibit loose confetti.

Balloon pop. A large black or white balloon filled with pink or blue confetti is popped by the couple using a pin or dart. The confetti release is the reveal. Works best when the balloon is genuinely large — at least 90cm — so the confetti release is visible from across the room. A balloon too small makes the reveal look anticlimactic; size is everything for this method.

Scratch card reveal. Each guest receives a scratch card before the reveal moment. All cards are scratched simultaneously at a counted moment, revealing the colour to every guest at exactly the same time. The quietest and most controlled reveal method — and the one that involves every guest most directly. Best for a small group where the collective scratch-and-reaction moment can be photographed and experienced as a shared instant.

Section 04Invitations & Stationery

The What Will It Bee invitation sets the dual-purpose expectation before any guest arrives. It announces a celebration and a question simultaneously — and the neutral exterior rule begins with the invitation itself. A What Will It Bee invitation in pink or blue gives away the answer on arrival; a What Will It Bee invitation in the neutral bee palette maintains the anticipation all the way to the reveal moment.
